Ylikylä School Wins the Public Vote for the Turku Good Construction Award

This year, the winner of the public vote for the Turku Good Construction Award is Ylikylä School, an extension to Wäinö Aaltonen School designed by ARCO. The Turku Cityscape working group also selected its own winner, awarding the Runosmäki Multipurpose Center Riimi.

A new, modern extension was completed in summer 2024 at Wäinö Aaltonen School, built on the site of the former Ylikylä School. The building is designed especially for first and second graders, preschoolers, and early childhood education groups. The extension provides a safe and comfortable learning environment tailored to the needs of young children.

The building features its own entrance and a green courtyard with play elements, creating a stimulating and supportive space for learning. Its light-colored wooden façade, combined with ochre-toned details, harmonizes with the surrounding school complex. Additionally, an art installation beneath the canopy complements the building’s color scheme and honors the aesthetic of Wäinö Aaltonen School.

The Turku Good Construction Award has been presented annually since 2018, aiming to highlight high-quality construction and well-executed projects. The nominees are selected by the Turku Cityscape Working Group.
