Arcon’s proposal, Kouvo, was selected as the winner of the Kouvola Theater Architectural Design Competition. The proposal was implemented in collaboration with Haworth Tompkins.
The evaluation of the competition entries focused particularly on the following factors: suitability for the surrounding urban environment, successful integration of new and old construction and building preservation, consideration of the requirements of theatrical operations, high-quality architecture, flexibility and multi-use of spaces, sustainability, environmental and energy efficiency, technical and economic feasibility, placement of functions on the site and outdoor spaces, logistics, traffic solutions, and parking solutions.
The winning proposal, Kouvo, was evaluated as follows:
Urban Design
The proposal’s strategy is to demolish the existing theater but build a new one in the same place, following the old principles. The community center, including its street facade, has been preserved and the building converted into a theater. The new urban ensemble is modern but respects the original concepts and spirit of the place.
Architecture
The proposal creates new, attractive architecture inspired by its roots. The overall composition is similar to the original but combines new and old parts. The new theater develops a strong identity of its own associated with Kouvola. The building is inviting and open, and the architecture of the interiors and facades is integrated into a single entity. Copper is a suitable material for permanent public buildings.
Functionality
The new large auditorium is located in the new building, which is a good principle for theater operations. The hall has been rotated 90 degrees compared to the current arrangement – in accordance with the original competition drawings from the 1950s. Part of the auditorium is located on a curved balcony. A new small auditorium has been built inside the community center. The plan is very functional as a theater, and the back and side spaces of the stages are ideal. The logistics and maintenance principles are functional. The public area is spacious, clear and high. The foyer has good views in different directions and towards the city. The restaurant opens onto the entrance hall, can operate independently, and has a well-located terrace. The public spaces can be used for serving, exhibitions and events. The construction phasing has been planned so that the theater’s operations can continue uninterrupted.
Sustainable Development
The community center can be renovated for new use and the new theater is space-efficient and functional. This maximizes the overall life cycle. The new building proposes the use of long-lasting and low-carbon materials such as solid wood, copper and brick.
Building Historical Values
The new urban ensemble respects the building historical and urban values of the existing buildings.
