ARCO’s proposal “Kouvo” was selected as the winning entry in the invited architectural competition for the Kouvola Theatre. The project was developed in collaboration with Haworth Tompkins.
The competition brief emphasised a holistic approach to urban integration, the reconciliation of new and existing structures, and the functional requirements of contemporary theatre operations. Particular attention was given to architectural quality, flexibility, sustainability, energy efficiency, and the technical and economic feasibility of the proposal.
Urban concept
The proposal replaces the existing theatre with a new building on the same site, while respecting the original principles of the ensemble. The street facade of the former community centre is preserved, and the building is adapted for theatre use.
The resulting composition is contemporary in expression while maintaining the spirit and key urban qualities of the site.
Architecture
“Kouvo” introduces a new, distinctive architectural identity rooted in the history of the place. The composition brings together new and existing elements into a coherent whole, reinforcing the theatre’s role as a cultural landmark in Kouvola.
The building is open and inviting, with interiors and facades forming a unified architectural language. Durable materials such as copper contribute to the building’s longevity and civic presence.

Functionality
The new main auditorium is located in the new building and rotated in line with the original 1950s scheme. A smaller auditorium is integrated into the renovated community centre. The layout supports efficient theatre operations, with well-organised backstage areas, clear logistics and generous public spaces. The foyer opens views towards the city, while the restaurant and terrace activate the entrance plaza. Public areas are designed for flexible use, from events to exhibitions. Construction is phased to allow uninterrupted theatre operations throughout the project.
Sustainability
The adaptive reuse of the community centre, combined with a compact and efficient new building, extends the life cycle of the entire complex. Material choices prioritise durability and low carbon impact, including solid wood, copper and brick.
Heritage values
The new ensemble respects the architectural and urban heritage of the existing buildings, integrating them naturally into a contemporary whole.
