The Kruunuvuori central block consists of three groups of buildings and an urban space for pedestrians.
Kruunuvuorenranta is a developing district near the Baltic Sea, opposite the city centre. The area is being developed in stages, flexibly adapting it to the needs of the city’s residents while offering impressive seascapes and archipelago scenery. The Crown Bridges Light Rail will bring the area even closer to the city centre, with the city centre accessible in 15 minutes by tram. Kruunuvuorenranta is planned to have 13 500 inhabitants and offer almost a thousand jobs.
The future heart of Kruunuvuorenranta is the central block of Kruunis. Kruunis is an active central block that will become a versatile centre for housing and services in the Kruunuvuorenranta area. The sustainable urban complex will offer housing and a wide range of local services for both new and existing residents – two supermarkets, everyday stores, speciality shops, cafés and restaurants.
The architecture of the proposal is clean-cut, highlighting the strong massing of the block. The brick façades range in colour from the light grey of the point blocks to the darker tones of the lower masses. The building openings are sleek and clear. The central role of the village square within the block is emphasised by the umber concrete façades of the ground floor. The warm-toned umber façades, together with the central pier, form the heart of the warm, vibrant central block.
Kruunis comprises of a diverse range of homes with a sea view that suit different lifestyles. In Kruunis, the elderly, children, singles and different types of families and working life come together naturally. The block meets the needs of various user groups thanks to the close proximity of daily services and the city centre. In addition, both a day-care centre and a school are under development right next door. The first residents will be able to move in at the same time as the Crown Bridges Light Rail and the tram link are completed.
The central village square has been transformed into a common living room that encourages active living and comfort and forms the backbone of the block. In the seaside setting, residents can sunbathe, play, drink coffee and relax. An essential focal point of the village square is the community space Laituritalo. The plan also takes into account sustainability targets. The energy system in the Kruunuvuori central unit uses natural energy sources. The flats are designed to be adaptable, and there is a wide variety of housing types. The materials have been chosen based on sustainability.
