Arco won the design competition for the development of the Sävelpuisto area in Järvenpää, an area of great scenic importance.
Sävelpuisto is a wooden complex of star-shaped apartment buildings and terraced houses built on parking facilities. In cooperation with NCC, the plan will develop Sävelpuisto into a gateway that blends into the landscape, where the cultural landscape of Lake Tuusulanjärvi will be naturally integrated into the city centre through wooden construction.
The starting point for the massing of the block was to make the boundary between the built environment and the landscape space overlap by subtly opening the block to its surroundings and making the block façade diverse. The differently oriented façades create a rich variety of light and shadow. The gently rising and falling slanting roofs make the silhouette fit well into the traditional landscape.
The massing of the blocks of flats creates varied and sheltered outdoor spaces and opens up attractive views. The masses, grouped in a row, create a series of communal courtyards. The star-like shape of the buildings allows the flats to face several different directions. Parking takes place in an above-ground parking facility on the eastern edge of the block. The small-scale residential buildings desired for the block are located on top of the parking facility. The wooden parking facility and the terraced houses are designed as a uniform complex.
