The modern architecture, sustainable construction solutions, and versatile teaching facilities of the school provide a learning environment for 360 students.
Metsola primary school opened in Pakila, Helsinki, at the beginning of 2023. The building is the result of a two-stage competitive negotiation procedure. The evaluation criteria included functional features, cityscape and architecture, technical features, life-cycle sustainability, and rental rate. Special attention has been paid to energy efficiency and life cycle sustainability.
The two-storey school building has a floor area of 3 600 m². The building’s learning spaces are divided into three functional areas to enable a wide range of learning situations. The school was also designed to accommodate a gym and a separate space for practical and art subjects. The natural relief of the schoolyard was utilised in the planning of the various functions, and the recess yard was designed to support the activity and play of students of all ages.
The long eaves of the wood-clad building and their high supporting pillars create a distinctive look for the school. The wooden cladding is predominantly white in colour, and the entrances are highlighted with a natural-coloured varnish. The facade colours flow from the outside to the inside, creating a harmonious colour scheme for the building.
The use of wood and sustainable solutions guided the design process, and an RTS environmental classification is being applied for for the site.
