The Sirkkala School, which won the Good Construction Award 2023 in the public vote category, has been designed with children in mind, to adapt to the varying needs of daily use.
The design for Sirkkala school in the eastern centre of Turku includes a new building, renovation of old protected wooden buildings on the site and alterations to a newer existing building from 2002. The School yard was completely renovated at the same time.
Children are at the heart of the design and the spaces are designed on their terms, to adapt to the varying needs of their daily use. The new building is located in the middle of a historic block of wooden houses and is skilfully planted in an environment that is demanding in scale and landscape, respecting both historic and functional values.

The colour scheme for the interior of the buildings is based on the apple orchard that used to stand on the site. The colours in the newer buildings come from the apple trees while in the older buildings the colours are inspired by vegetation surrounding the orchard. The colour schemes of the renovated buildings also take into account the colours typical of the original construction period.
